Sony Launches 64GB Memory Card With 'Premium Sound' for Audiophiles

Its not been even a week since we saw reports
about Sony's imminent exit from smartphone and
television business, and the Japanese tech giant
has gone ahead and announced the SR-64HXA -
a 64GB Class 10 microSDXC card with a
'Premium Sound' tag that costs five times as
much as a regular microSDXC card.
The Verge reports that the SR-64HXA costs JPY
18,500 (roughly $155 or Rs. 9,600). It could be a
great accessory for those who intend to pick up
the Sony Walkman ZX2, which the company
announced at CES 2015 and has an astronomical
price tag of $1,200 (approximately Rs. 74,700).
This card is currently available only in Japan.
Audiophiles might find it worth the price but for
majority of the folks, who listen to music prefer
streaming or use only bundled earphones, will
find it too expensive.
As the tag suggests, the memory card is
engineered for sound quality. What this
effectively means is that SR-64HXA produces
less electrical noise when reading data. We are
unsure if that actually makes much of a
difference considering how flash drives are
already pretty quiet.
Interestingly, when questioned about the market
for such a product, a fairly clueless Sony
spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal, "We
aren't that sure about the product's potential
demand, but we thought some, among people
who are committed to great sound quality, would
want it."
We really don't know what Sony seems to be
smoking these days but we know one thing for
sure, the quest for audiophile-grade equipment
puts a dent... no... a crater in the pocket.

Google Buys Facebook-Focused App Marketing Firm Toro

Google has acquired mobile marketing company Toro, a firm that helps developers market their apps on social media platforms like Facebook. The announcement came via Toro on Tuesday, but neither company has disclosed the financial terms of the deal.

Announcing the acquisition via Toro blog, the startup company wrote, "With greater resources and distribution now available at our disposal, we're excited to join Google and continue our mission of making the lives of app developers easier."

The San Francisco-based startup Toro, which was originally known as Red Hot Labs Inc., is known for offering services and tools to help software makers boost their user numbers, and was best known for its Facebook ad campaigns. It was also a Facebook 'Preferred Marketing Developer' (PMD).

The company is led by Amitt Mahajan and Joel Poloney. The duo previously co-founded MyMiniLife, and is said (via TechCrunch) to have played a key role in the creation of FarmVille.

Now after the acquisition, Toro blog notes that the company would continue to support existing customers, however new campaign creation has been suspended temporarily.

"For our existing marketing customers, we will continue to optimize your campaigns and update your dashboards, though campaign creation has been suspended for the time being. We recommend working with an alternative Facebook PMD for new campaigns going forward. For reporting customers, your reports will continue free of interruption. We want to extend a huge thanks to everyone who has supported our team and product along the way. We're eager to get back to work building amazing products for you within Google!" added the Toro blog.

Techcrunch notes a Google spokesperson has confirmed the acquisition, and that Toro will be joining the Mountain View giant's mobile advertisement team.

Samsung Unveils Ultra-Fast 128GB Flash Storage; May Debut on Galaxy S6

Samsung on Thursday announced that it is now mass producing ultra-fast 128GB flash memory modules, based on the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard for next-generation flagship smartphones, hinting at inclusion in the upcoming Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge a.k.a Galaxy S Edge - expected on March 1.

To remind you, Samsung in its first teaser video of the "Next Galaxy" had words such as "the faster I am", "the more that gets done", "And the more time I can give to others", hinting at the performance - which as we know is not just linked to the processor only, but many other factors including display resolution, RAM, flash memory, OS and more. Interestingly, a report on Tuesday also tipped the device to come in three storage variants, which included the 128GB inbuilt storage option along with 32GB and 64GB. Alongside, an image leak indicated the lack of a microSD card slot.

Announcing modules based on the new UFS standard, Samsung said that the new memory modules will be available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB sizes, and if we look at the timing of the announcement, all three can very well be seen in the three tipped storage variants of the Samsung Galaxy S6.

The company says that the ultra-fast UFS embedded memory package is a new ePoP (embedded package on package) solution that can be stacked directly on top of a logic chip, taking approximately 50 percent less space. It conducts 19,000 input/output operations per second and is 2.7 times faster than eMMC 5.0, which is currently embedded in high-end smartphones.

"For random writing of data to storage, the blazingly fast UFS embedded memory operates at 14,000 IOPS and is 28 times as fast as a conventional external memory card, making it capable of supporting seamless Ultra HD video playback and smooth multitasking functions at the same time, enabling a much improved mobile experience," said company.

'World's First Hands-Free Smartphone Built for the Physically Challenged'

sesame_phone_official.jpg
An Israeli company has built the world's first completely hands-free smartphone for the physically challenged.
The smartphone, developed by start-upSesame Enable, is designed for people with spinal cord injuries, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), cerebral palsy or other disabilities that affects the use of hands and arms, The Times of Israel reported.
The Sesame is an Android smartphone that is equipped with proprietary head-tracking technology.
An advanced computer vision algorithm and the phone's front-facing camera track user's head movements and allow them to control a cursor on screen.
The cursor is essentially a virtual finger that let users do what others can with a regular smartphone.
The $1,000-phone recently won a "Verizon Powerful Answers' Award" with $1 million (roughly Rs. 6 crores) in prize money.
Its developer Giora Livne, who himself is physically challenged, now plans to give away about 30 Sesame smartphones to people with disabilities nominated by their peers.
"My life quality jumped from the Stone Age to the smartphone age," Livne was quoted as saying.
Livne came up with the idea after seeing a TV demonstration for a game controlled with head movements.
With a background in electrical engineering, he recognised the technology's potential to help him, and others.
He now regularly texts and sends WhatsApp messages to his friends and three children.
The five Sesame recipients so far include a former Israeli soldier who was injured in 1976 and a little boy in Britain with muscular dystrophy.

Jet Airways Launches Mobile Boarding Pass Pilot Project

jet_airways_photo_crew_website.jpg

Jet Airways today said it has partnered with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and Bangalore airport for a pilot project to test the use of mobile boarding passes on its flights.

During this trial phase, passengers can use barcoded boarding passes on their mobile phones to enter Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KGIA), pass through security and board their flight, the airline said in a release.

The project is being carried out on select Jet Airways flights from Bengaluru to Mumbai and Delhi on a trial basis since last week, it said.

This removes the need for paper boarding passes and fast tracks departure process.

As a part of the pilot project, airport operator Bangalore International Airport Limited has installed mobile boarding pass scanners at the entrance of the terminal and security check points as also at the boarding gates, it said.

The mobile boarding pass has been designed in-house by Jet Airways and follows all IATA standards and requirements, the airline said.

Apple removes sensors from smartwatch

Apple removes sensors from smartwatch

LONDON: Apple reportedly had some sensors removed from its new smartwatch after discovering that arm hair was obstructing its functioning.

According to Daily Star, Apple wanted their watch to measure a host of bodily functions, such as blood pressure and stress levels.

However, the company figured that strap tightness, skin types and hair issues disrupted the smartwatch's accurate readings and decided to have the sensors removed.

The smartwatch will be launched in April and the device and will be fitted with some fitness aids including heart rate monitor and activity tracking, the report added.

Samsung Unveils First eMMC 5.1 Storage for Smartphones and Tablets

samsung_chips_generic_samsungtomorrow.jpgSamsung on Wednesday introduced its first eMMC (embedded multimedia card) 5.1 flash memory chips, which have been approved by semiconductor industry's standards group JEDEC.
eMMC storage is standard in all smartphones and tablets being produced nowadays. It essentially brings a NAND memory and controller on to a single chip, thus helping reduce space requirements and boosting performance.
The newly-approved NAND flash technology standard - eMMC 5.1 - by Samsung is claimed to be faster and more seamless in terms of multitasking activities, including the streaming and playback of UHD (Ultra High Definition) video content because of its first command queue function.
The company says that new chips will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, and that it has already started preparing to ship its first eMMC 5.1 products to some smartphone and tablet OEMs.
The 64GB eMMC 5.1 memory is claimed to deliver a maximum speed of 250MB/s for sequential data reading and 125MB/s for sequential data writing.
"For random read and write performance, ours 64GB eMMC 5.1 memory achieves up to 11,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 13,000 IOPS, which are approximately seven and 26 times faster respectively, compared to a typical external microSD card with approximately 1,500 IOPS and 500 IOPS," notes Samsung.
The eMMC 5.1 chips also supports "Secure Write Protection" that ensures only designated users will be able to access secured areas of the eMMC.
Earlier this month, Samsung had started mass production of its first combined RAM and storage ePOP memory package. The company had announced that it has made a breakthrough single-package solution for memory chips that will use up to 40 percent less space in smartphones

InterDigital Loses Another Round in Nokia, ZTE Patent Fight

InterDigital Inc , a patent licensing firm, lost an infringement fight over wireless phone technology on Wednesday, as a U.S. appeals court ruled against it.

InterDigital had sued phone maker Nokia and ZTE Corp over patents used in the phones. Since the suit was filed, Nokia's handset business was purchased by Microsoft Corp. InterDigital shares slid, closing down 3.4 percent at $49.14.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a decision by the International Trade Commission, which found the patents were not infringed.
The appeal involved five patents. Four help the cell phone use less power and one allows the device to use various networks to transfer data.
The Federal Circuit also upheld the ITC's decision to declare the fifth patent invalid because it is obvious, which means it cannot be infringed.
Microsoft was pleased with the decision, said spokesman David Cuddy.
ZTE said it was confident all along that it was innocent of infringement. "ZTE is pleased that the Court of Appeals has confirmed this," the company said in a statement.
InterDigital said it was disappointed by the decision but would push on with other litigation that it already has under way.
"We remain very confident in the strength of our portfolio, and in our ability to continue to grow our licensing program," William J. Merritt, chief executive of InterDigital, said in a statement.
Separately, InterDigital sued ZTE Corp and Microsoft's Nokia handset business in a district court in Delaware using different patents. It won against ZTE in October but the Microsoft trial has not yet begun.
Companies frequently sue at the ITC to win an injunction against infringement and in district court to win damages.
The case at the International Trade Commission is InterDigital Communications v. Nokia Corp and ZTE Corp and is No. 337-868. At the Federal Circuit, it was No. 2014-1176.

7 WHATSAPP TIPS THAT EVERY USER SHOULD KNOW

With more than 600 million active users,WhatsApp is now the popular messaging app worldwide. The vast user base also makes the app vulnerable to hacking and other security risks.WhatsApp does release security updates and fixes time to time issues, here are some simple tips from security research company ESET to make it more secure.

Block WhatsApp photos from appearing in Gallery

Pictures that you receive on WhatsApp are automatically stored in your phone’s Gallery, exposing them to anyone who browses photos on your phone. In iPhone, you can go into the phone’s Settings menu, then tap ‘Privacy’, ‘Photos’, and deselect WhatsApp which will restrict this.
For Android users it’s a little bit complicated.Using a file explorer app such as ES File Explorer, you can find WhatsApp’s ‘Images’ and ‘Videos’ folders and create a file within each called ‘.nomedia’. This will stop Android Gallery app from scanning the folder. If not get KeepSafe app from the play store and hide the selected pics and videos.(This app can be used to any pics or videos on your smartphone).

Restrict access to profile picture

Set profile picture sharing to “contacts only” in the Privacy menu to hide your WhatsApp profile photo from unknown users and the people who are not in your contacts.People who don’t know you can download your picture from your WhatsApp profile and, through Google Image search, can find out more about you so this would help you from all these problems.

 Beware of scams

WhatsApp will never contact users through the app and does not send emails about chats, voice messages, payment, changes, photos, or videos, unless you contact their help and support.
Anyone offering a free subscription, claiming to be from WhatsApp or encouraging you to follow links in order to safeguard your account is definitely a scam and should not be trusted. These links could lead to websites that install malware and spyware or track your personal details.

Deactivate WhatsApp if you lose your phone

If you lose your smartphone, immediately activate WhatsApp with the same phone number on a different phone, with a replacement SIM.One of the basic security measures that WhatsApp takes is that the app can only be used by one number on one device at a time, so by doing so you instantly block it from being used on your old phone. If that’s not possible, WhatsApp can also deactivate your account.

 Keep the WhatsApp app locked

WhatsApp doesn’t offer a built-in password or pin, you can use third party apps like Messenger and Chat Lock, Lock for WhatsApp and Secure Chat if you use an Android phone. This will help you from exposing your private chats, photos and videos from others who steal your smartphone or take it from you.

Hide the ‘last seen’ timestamp

WhatsApp’s much disliked ‘last seen’ feature can also be disabled, it could help prevent your stalker know what time you were last online. You can disable or restrict who sees your ‘last seen’ time in WhatsApp’s ‘Profile’; ‘Privacy’ menu, in Android, iOS, Windows or Blackberry. However, if you turn it off, you won’t be able to see other users’ ‘last seen’ times either.

Be careful of what you talk about

You should not share confidential information, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, bank or credit card details, or passport or other identification details on WhatsApp.A man in the middle attack could lead to this information being compromised. WhatsApp has introduced end-to-end encryption for its Android users but other platforms are still vulnerable.

Facebook bug allows man to delete your photos

Facebook logo and source code

Public photos on Facebook could be deleted with just four lines of code, says an online security researcher.
Laxman Muthiyah was playing around with Graph API - the tool which developers use to make Facebook apps.
Testing it on his own photos, Muthiyah found a way to manipulate the code so that it deleted one of his images.
"What if your photos get deleted without your knowledge? Obviously that's very disgusting isn't it?" he wrote on his blog.

Silhouettes in front of Facebook logo

"I got access to delete all of your Facebook photos (photos which are public or the photos I could see)," explained Mathuyah.
He immediately reported the bug to Facebook's security team.
"They were fast in identifying this issue and there was a fix in place in less than two hours from the acknowledgement of the report."
It does not appear that any misuse has been reported as a result of this bug - and private photos and data were not affected.
A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the sequence of events, saying in a statement: "We received a report about an issue with our Graph API and quickly fixed it
"We'd like to thank the researcher who reported the issue to us through our bug bounty program."

Eye with Facebook logo reflected in it

Facebook has a programme in placewhere "white hats" or ethical computer hackers, can report vulnerabilities to the site.
"If you give us reasonable time to respond to your report before making any information public, and make a good faith effort to avoid privacy violations, destruction of data, and interruption or degradation of our service during your research, we will not bring any lawsuit against you or ask law enforcement to investigate you," the social network says.
A number white hats are also offered a "monetary bounty" for reporting bugs, while some have their names posted to a thank you page on the site.
Muthiyah has posted a screenshot of a Facebook message saying he has been offered $12,500 (£8,130) as a reward for finding the fault.

Apple is working on an electric car, Wall Street Journal reports

The rumors have been getting stronger all week, and now they've come to a head: WSJ is reporting that Apple is indeed working on a car. "Project Titan," as it's known internally, is an all-electric vehicle that apparently "resembles a minivan" in its current iteration and has a team of several hundred people working on it.
THERE'S NO GUARANTEE IT'LL MAKE IT TO PRODUCTION
That's not to say that there'll ever be an Apple car on the road, necessarily. WSJ hedges its report, noting that it'd be several years at least before Titan could be ready for production, and that's assuming Cook and company decide to go through with the project. It could also end up being more of a platform for testing other products and technologies related to mobility that Apple is working on — things like CarPlay, for instance.
Apple has apparently had this in the hopper for a while: the report claims that Tim Cook signed off on Titan nearly a year ago, giving ex-Ford engineer and current Apple exec Steve Zadesky a team of 1,000 staff from across a variety of departments in the company. In recent months, company staff have visited contract manufacturers that could potentially build a car (or components of a car) on Apple's behalf; one company that WSJ names is Magna Steyr, which has built cars for Mercedes and BMW in the past, among others.
It's not totally clear why Apple would be looking to make such an enormous leap from its core competency — building great consumer electronics — but there might be a simple explanation: the company's explosive growth will eventually peter out unless it expands to new markets, and there's no question that transportation would fall into that category.

How to Download and Install Windows 10 Technical Preview for Phones

Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is now available to download. This is a pre-release version of Microsoft's upcoming mobile operating system. You should only download this if you want to try a new operating system on your Windows Phone device. Since this is beta software, many of your favourite apps may not work on it and upgrading to it right now is not recommended on your primary phone as the preview is still very much a work in progress.
If you have a spare Windows Phone device lying around or if you love playing around with latest (potentially buggy) builds of operating systems, then read on.
Supported devices
Currently, Microsoft says only six Lumia phones can download and install Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones. These are:
  • Lumia 630
  • Lumia 635
  • Lumia 636
  • Lumia 638
  • Lumia 730
  • Lumia 830
More phones will be supported in future builds, but for now only users of the phones listed above can try Windows 10 Technical Preview.
Backing up your data
This is beta software and hence can be very buggy. That's why we recommend that you make a complete backup of your Windows Phone first. We have written a detailed guide on how to backup and delete all data on your Windows Phone device and you must go follow all the steps listed there before proceeding.
Downloading and installing Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones
The process for downloading Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is not too hard, especially if you know how to download and install Windows 10 Technical Preview on your PC. Follow these steps.
  1. Head to the Windows Insider page.
  2. Click Get Started to sign up for the programme.
  3. Enter your Outlook.com email address and password.
  4. Click Sign in.
  5. Read the terms of service, scroll down and check I accept the terms of this agreement (required).
  6. Click Submit.
  7. Scroll down and click Phone.
  8. Scroll down and click Get the preview.
  9. Download the Windows Insider app on your Windows Phone device.
  10. Open the app and sign in using your Microsoft account.
  11. Tap Get preview builds.
  12. Here you'll have to choose between receiving OS updates as they're released or after some bugs have been fixed. Tap Insider Fast to stay on the bleeding edge or pick Insider Slow if you'd like a slightly more reliable build.
  13. Take a look at all the warnings and then tap Accept.
  14. Tap the Windows button on your phone.
  15. Go to Settings > Phone Update.
  16. Tap Check for updates.
Now you'll be able to download the latest Windows 10 builds for your smartphone. Tell us about your experience with Windows 10 on mobile and PC via the comments. For more tutorials, visit our How To section.
